Current Projects
The following list represents just a few of the many projects around the world being initiated and developed with the Lowell Milken Center. These projects are in various stages of development. Each project has outcomes, which causes students to change attitudes and behavior. Projects will continue to be added to this list, and more information, photos and materials will be added to each project as it grows and evolves.
*NEW* Amos Bronson: The Inventor of Ideas
Midwest
Portraying Louisa May Alcott in a drama presentation, Theresa Schafer, a Midwest student shows the life of Alcott's father and his immense impact on education. Amos Bronson was an incredible inventor of educational ideas that still impact public education today.
An American Hero
Wakefield, Virginia
The "Terry Dozier Project" is a search in history, involving primary documents and the story of a great American educator. Students are searching the past of this Virginia educator, whose project is tapping young people's creativity and teaching understanding and respect of all people.
Army Chaplain Emil Kapaun: Unsung Hero of the Korean War
Oklahoma
The Center staff has researched and compiled a list of many topics for teachers and students, including the topic of an amazing Korean War POW hero, Emil Kapaun. Students from Oklahoma search through primary sources for the project. LMC Program Director Megan Felt is working with the Oklahoma teacher and students, who are creating a film documentary.
Life in a Jar
Bourbon County, Kansas
The Life in a Jar project has been called one of the “finest educational projects in American history.” Students from Bourbon County and the Lowell Milken Center continue their effort to share the story of Holocaust heroine Irena Sendler.
*NEW* Lomax and Edison: Impacting American Music
Midwest
Three students along with the Center staff are developing a group performance about John A. Lomax. This unsung hero in history contributed so much to modern music.
*NEW* "The Forgotten Man Who Won the War"
Kansas
Students are developing a website on Andrew Higgins, hailed as the “man who won the war for us” by inventing landing craft that equipped US soldiers on pivotal D-day.
*NEW* A Milken Educator as an Unsung Hero
Illinois
The Lowell Milken Center is working with Allyce who is writing a script on Vanessa Martinez's life. Allyce uses drama to tell educational stories and is a student at Illinois Wesleyan University.
*NEW* Osa and Martin Johnson
Midwest
Martin and Osa Johnson’s amazing story of establishing contact with African tribes comes to life through a student-produced performance. The Johnson's are inspirational "unsung heroes." Their story is not well-known. These Midwest students are focusing on Martin Johnson’s innovative use of photography and documentary film to establish contact and develop relationships with tribes in Kenya, Tanzania, and the Congo.
*NEW* “13 Cokes, 12 Students and 1 History Teacher: Innovation in the Civil Rights Movement”
Midwest
To honor Clara Luper and the work of her students, the Center is working with two junior high students on an exhibit. The students are studying the Civil Rights Movement and the innovative social movements that were used to push for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and equality.
*NEW* Unsung Heroes of the Holocaust
Kahuku, Hawaii
Jessica Tew, a senior high student from Laie, is collaborating
with the Center on the survey of unsung heroes. At the Center, we encourage this kind of project based learning, touching all areas of a historical subjects.
