Army Chaplain Emil Kapaun: Unsung Hero of the Korean War
Oklahoma

Chaplain Emil Kapaun Chaplain Kapaun helping a fellow soldier during the Korean War

This heroic chaplain spent seven months as a POW in North Korea, setting a standard for bravery. A Kansas farm boy, Father Kapaun is being nominated for Sainthood in the Catholic Church. In addition, Emil Kapaun has several schools in Kansas named after him.

Kapuan provided service and care for his fellow prisoners regardless of their race, religion or color while a POW in North Korea. Disregarding his own failing health and the dangerous guards he tended to the sick and wounded. It was not until a blood clot formed in his leg that his daily rounds to care for the sick were prevented. Emil Kapaun was taken to a local hospital but was denied treatment, this lead to his death on May 23, 1951.
